Raptor Perching and Boxes- Information and Plans

raptors in the valley have had their habitats and hunting grounds destroyed. Adding perching and box homes will help them greatly.

We are looking for people who would like to help us build perches and boxes so we can distribute them throughout the valley. If you are a carpenter or woodworker and can provide your services we can provide material costs.

If you are a resident of the Ojai Valley and have land that you would like to offer to put perching or boxes on click here.

***We have had an overwhelming response to box/perching requests. Please fill out our form but note it may take some time for us to respond to you as we go into nesting season. Our boxes, and perching are all made by volunteers and we can only produce so many at a time. Thank you! If you would like to construct your own box, please scroll down for plans.

raptor t-perches

These are two different plans, one is for slightly larger birds but in reality all kinds of birds will use these kinds of posts. For our local raptors (and migratory visitors), the species we are talking about are: Red-tailed Hawks, Red-shouldered Hawks, Barn Owls, Cooper's Hawks, Great Horned Owls, White-tailed Kites, Merlins, American Kestrels, Osprey, the occasional Bald and Golden Eagle, and more.

Pictured above is our standard for raptor T-perching. Constructed with 4x4 post and cross piece and 2x4 arms. *For the perches going out into the valley- we do not want to use astro-turf padding but we will want the top edges of the top cross piece to be slightly sanded down.

Another T-Perch Plan for smaller raptors

This construction is for smaller birds of prey and uses 2x4s in the place of 4x4s. The cross beams should be 3 ft. wide.
