DRIFTER THE BROAD-WINGED HAWK
Drifter was found in downtown Santa Barbara in 2014. In 20+ years of rehabilitation director of ORC Kimberly Stroud has taken in only one other Broadwing. Though the majority of Broadwings reside on the East Coast and migrate South through the Midwest, there are a small number that migrate South through California. We believe Drifter was making his first migration when he suffered a fracture to his Coracoid bone on his left side.
Fun facts: Broad-winged Hawks migrate in large groups called "kettles." Broadwings are also the smallest hawk in the genus Buteo.
