OJAI RAPTOR CENTER WILDLIFE EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND SHOWS
While our main goal at ORC is always rehabilitation and release, we currently house 17 non-releasable animals who act as ambassadors of their species in our Wildlife Education Program. Our outreach programs educate the public about wildlife, including how to be responsible stewards for our shared environment and reduce the number of animals that require assistance.
Due to permanent injuries, these animals would not survive if they were released to the wild, and if they meet the requirements for our educational outreach program, they undergo months, sometimes years, of training to be comfortable enough to be presented to the public.
A Wildlife Education Program lasts one hour, and typically consists of 6-7 ambassadors. We usually bring an even number of diurnal (hawks and falcons) and nocturnal (owls) birds, unless otherwise requested. Some of the topics discussed in our presentations are food chains, predator/prey dynamics, symbiotic relationships in wildlife, flight function and form, basic physiology, adaptations and evolutionary patterns, just to name a few. We also bring age-appropriate handout materials and biofacts (wings, talons, feathers, pellets) for a tactile learning experience which maximizes learning.
These programs enrich any classroom and engage students and adults of all ages. Most people will never have the opportunity to observe these powerful creatures this close, and even the most knowledgeable birders always walk away from one of our programs having learned something new and exciting about raptors or wildlife.
For classroom presentations we charge $325.00 for a 1 hour program. For larger groups and assemblies we charge $550. We are open to adjustments in times for multiple classrooms and groups. For larger all-day events we are able to bring our ORC booth and education ambassadors for a fee depending on time and the amount of people.
