The symbol of our country is a raptor - the Bald Eagle. The Egyptians worshipped the Falcon. The American Indian revered these animals, creating headresses from their beautiful feathers. Raptors are birds of prey, which also include hawks and owls. They are magnificent, majestic animals and once you see one, you will never forget the experience. Most birds you see around your garden have their eyes on the sides of their head. A raptor's eyes can gaze straight at you. They need this ability to spot their prey. Their ability to see at great distances is keen. As with every creature on our planet, they are an integral part in the balance of nature. There are 17 resident species found here in Ventura County.
