Volunteer Training Class a Big Success!
Nearly 80 people were in attendance at the first ORC Volunteer Training Class of the year. New volunteers and supporters as well as veteran wildlife rehabbers gathered Saturday Feb 4th in Ventura to hear an informative lecture by Jamie Pavlot about Steatitus in Herons. This nutritional deficiency disease has been showing up in Great Blue Herons and Black Crowned Night Herons in increasing numbers for the past few years in Southern California, so it's valuable information for people working with wildlife.
After the lecture, a Handling and Transporting Class was conducted. Volunteers were shown safe handling techniques for raptors and other wildlife that need to be transported to a rescue facility. It was a hands-on session with many volunteers donning protective leather gloves and taking a turn at pulling a bird successfully from a box and getting it safely back in. I'm pleased to report that no birds escaped during this training exercise!

There are signs of springtime here at the Ojai Raptor Center. Three fluffy baby Barn Owls arrived at ORC in January this year. That's pretty early, even for Southern California!
