VULTURES
Although vultures are not true birds of prey, they are large carrion eating birds who have established their vital role in the ecosystem. ORC often receives injured or sick vultures who are then treated in our Rehabilitation Center.

Handsome is an imprint (our most preventable injury). A bird that has become "imprinted" is usually one who has been raised by humans and then relates to people instead of recognizing their own species. An imprinted bird will generally not be successful at feeding itself, finding a mate, raising young, etc. They will associate people with food and if released, will turn to people for food when they are hungry. Therefore, imprinted birds are classified as non-releasable. Can you imagine having a large Turkey Vulture with a 6+ foot wingspan landing next to you begging for food?

Handsome was found in Louisville, Kentucky and turned over to the Raptor Rehabilitation Center there after the person had kept him for about a week. Vultures are very social and imprint quickly. He ran from the vulture chicks he was put in with, to the volunteers at the center. He came to ORC as a young vulture and has since matured into a beautiful, sleek bird and does a terrific job as an education bird in our Resident Raptor Program.
